Rifle and Pistol Range Closure - *UPDATE #4*

Posted August 11, 2017

The maintenance project to remove and replace the existing baffles on the 15 yard pistol range is nearing completion.

The old baffles have been removed and concrete foundation blocks installed. There were a couple of delays in getting the foundation blocks set to accommodate the uneven nature of the ecology block walls. The baffles are being assembled and installed this week with bracing installed next week. The project should be completed by the 18th of August. Keep checking the website to see when the rifle and pistol ranges are re-opened.

All rifle and pistol ranges are still closed to all shooting activities during the project and there will be no afterhours shooting. Gate cards with member’s access have been shut off for the duration of the project.

Primitive area shooting will be open for scheduled events and the normal shotgun schedule for trap and 5-stand will be maintained.

25 Years Ago at the PSC – November 1991

Posted November 5, 2016

Discovered among some old work items were seven slides taken of the PSC rifle and pistol ranges in November 1991. The slides were scanned. The place looked different back then. Note the gravel parking lot complete with mud puddles and pot holes. No baffles, no concrete range divider walls, no enclosed shooting covers, tires for range divider walls, and no range office or buildings or storage sheds.

Range fees were collected on the honor system, deposit the money in a container on a post at the front gate. These pictures were taken shortly after completion of a range reconfiguration spearheaded by Bill Price. The reconfiguration cut the width of the 50 yard shooting line in half and tripled the width of the 100/200 yard rifle lines by moving half of the 50 yard berm out to 100 yards. The old 50 yard line width extended to the end of the concrete pad you can see at 25 yards on page 1 of 7. The pictures, in one PDF file can be found here.

The November 1991 newsletter was available so it was scanned and is provided here. You do not know what you have got until it is gone.

If you have any old pictures, slides, or club items you would like to share, let me know and I will help get them on the web page.

The gate repair project is complete and the gate is back in service. Your old gate card will not work and it has to be replaced. Individual appointments will not be made to exchange cards and they will not be sent out in the US Mail.

Afterhours shooting was reopened effective May 14th. If you are not familiar with the rules, you need to review the afterhours SOP in the member’s secure area.

At this time we do not have any afterhours member orientation classes scheduled. If you want to qualify for an afterhours card, come to the club meetings and express your interest.

Gate Repair Update

Updated May 12, 2016

The gate repairs have been completed but it is not yet open for use. Continue to use the old side gate as long as the normal gate is blocked off.

I am in the process of programming the system and issuing the new cards. There will be a priority sequence for issuing the new cards.

Range officers and maintenance personnel will be first followed by the general membership that currently have active cards. Replacement cards will not be sent out in the US mail. You will have to pick them up in person. Do not throw away your old cards. Keep them to exchange for a new card. New cards will be free when you turn in your old card. Otherwise they will cost $5.

We are not yet ready to open up afterhours shooting. Be patient a while longer. We do not have any afterhours classes scheduled at this time. Again be patient a while longer.

Membership Update

Posted December 2, 2015

The first item is an increase in dues for the NRA. NRA dues will be going up starting January 1, 2016. The best information I have is 1-year dues will increase from $35 to $40, 3-year dues will increase from $85 to $100, and 5-year dues will increase from $125 to $140.

If your NRA membership expires before April 1, 2016 you will have to renew in time to get your new membership proof back before I can process your PSC membership renewal. The NRA renewal process can take from several days to a few weeks depending on the renewal method you choose.

Go to our membership page and read the details carefully.

I will start processing PSC renewals right after January 1, 2016. If you are going to be out of the area and want to send your renewal in early that is fine.

Our membership waiting list has 55 names and is growing steadily. If you have any questions, send me an e-mail.

Doc Mehlenbeck 1948 - 2015

Posted July 9, 2015

He was simply known as "Doc" around our rifle and pistol ranges. If you asked him why he liked to be called Doc it was because he was a dentist in the Navy and he was not very fond of his first name, which was Clarence. These words are difficult to write just thinking he is gone. It was easy to pick him out of the crowd at the range as he was the big guy that acted like he knew what he was doing, and that’s because he did.

Doc was a regular on our ranges for many years and more so the past couple of years after his second retirement... [read more]

Gate Card Training Class

Updated June 4, 2014

The June 14th gate card class is the last one scheduled, and it has only 5 members enrolled. If you'd like to shoot after hours, you need this class. If you're a new member and would like an overview of club rules and how the rifle and pistol ranges operate, you probably want to attend. The June 14th class will start in the clubhouse at 1:00 and finish on the ranges before 3:00. Bring eye and ear protection for the range tour. Contact me to sign up at

Posted March 27, 2014

For our regularly scheduled meeting on April Fool’s Day (oops, seriously folks, April 1st), the primary agenda item will be an open discussion of the proposed Mission, Vision, and long-term goals of the club.
